This series of books is quite a cut above average when compared with many other historical romance novels. Although I've read other books by Marsha Canham, none have stayed in my heart and mind as the books in this series have. Canham does an amazing job with the background of the particular events and individuals involved in the attempt by Scotland's Highland clans to set Charles Stuart on the throne of England, culminating in what is now known as the Battle of Culloden - a horrendous battle which forever changed the way of life of the Scottish people.I realize that many readers who enjoy this genre, are often more interested in the romance part - as am I. Still, I doubt you'll be disappointed in this book. In my opinion, the romance between our leading man, Alexander Cameron a.k.a. "The Dark Cameron," and his lovely "English Rose" wife, Catherine Ashbrooke, gives the reader one of the most amazing match-ups in any historical romance novel out there.
Yes, there is lots of plotting, planning and strategizing, taking place amongst the military men in charge of upcoming battles in the beginning of the book, which I must confess, was not exactly where my interests lay, but the groundwork for the storyline had to be set out. Once the story revolves back to the personal lives of Alex and Catherine, it's just amazingly Over. The Top. The deepening of their love and relationship which began in The Pride of Lions (Scotland Trilogy Book 1) continues to evolve in this second book in the trilogy. Alex's alpha male, highly protective instincts, caused him to continually want to leave Catherine in safe places which basically meant as far away from Alex as possible as he and the other Highlanders prepared and involved themselves in the bloody confrontations leading up to Culloden - the bloodiest of all.
Catherine comes through like a champ over and over again. Although she had been a somewhat selfish, manipulative young lady when she and Alex first crossed paths, her love for Alex caused her basic nature to come to the forefront and we see a much more grown up Catherine who considers others' needs above her own in this second book. A huge plus in this story is the fulfillment of the love of Catherine's maid, Deidre, and Alex's closest friend, Aluinn, which we're also made privy to - although not in quite the same detail as the primary love story.
I won't spoil the story by giving out the extremely emotional and sad details of the blood bath and aftermath of Culloden. You know when you're reading the book, there will be some parts toward the end, you'll want to scream, "No, not him - No, not her!" Still, you move forward with the realization that when a book is written about true historical facts as it relates to war and battles, there will be grief, sorrow and tears - yes, there will be death and blood - lots of it. But, Alex and Catherine live to love again another day with their hopes and dreams, although adjusted, still resident in their hearts. I look forward to the third book in the series, Midnight Honor (Scotland Trilogy Book 3).
**Spoilerish** For all of you who love a stunning alpha male - let me give the following description of Alexander - as written by the author - when he is preparing to face his chief adversary in a duel:
"A lone figure stood poised against the distended wisps of mist, his wild black hair flung forward against his cheeks and throat, his long powerful legs braced wide apart. The cloak he had worn earlier was gone. He was dressed in black breeches and a white linen shirt, the latter fitting loosely across the massive shoulders and left open at the throat to reveal a wealth of curling black hair on his chest. Held in front of him, his hands draped almost leisurely across the hilt, was a sword that looked as though it had been forged in Dante's inferno. Tall - almost as tall as its owner - polished to a mirror brightness, it identified the warrior of legend, the Dark Cameron, and commanded the attention of every man on the field."

I just can't find the words to describe what I'm feeling right now after just having read this book. I can say this with utmost certainty, this book is easily one of the absolute best books I have ever read of historical Scotland romance. Heck, of any romance book quite frankly.
I swear to you, you will be swept up in the battles, you'll find yourself cheering the heroes, you'll smile at the friendships formed, you'll cry at the losses everyone endures (I am not ashamed to admit I she's a fair amount of tears!), you're heart will surely break at many turns (I know I heard some pieces of mine crack for sure!), and you'll find hope in love!!. I tell you I've never felt more emotionally invested in a book that I found myself eagerly turning the pages only to go back and re-read something brilliant!
Alluin and Deirdre! My goodness what a story! What an unbelievable love!
I couldn't help but research the actual history in the book and was pleasantly surprised that the author stayed true to actual events. And I have an immeasurable respect for her creativity and imagination in weaving and intertwining her own story into the already rich history.
I don't want to give anything away. All I can do is sincerely recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. I assure you!
Blood of Roses. I was so eager to read this 2nd book to see what happened to the Characters. But it turned into a long drag of violence that I read bit by bit over days with more stressful apprehension than joy. It was like a long journey through a long dark muddy corridor with storms overhead. When it ended I was exhausted and sad and went for a long walk in the fresh air.
There was so much descriptive plans of battles, violence and brutal killings. The whole atmosphere of the book was doom and gloom with the spectre of death hanging over every chapter, even in the bedroom scenes. I was convinced all the characters would end up dead.
As it is a fiction based on Scotland history I cannot see why 2 beautiful characters, I won't name, so in love, who deserved a happy future together, were killed off by the Author in such a horrific way and place and left at the mercy of the English who behaved like savages, thirsty for blood, hacking the wounded after the battle was over !.
Even Catherine's ex- fiancé, The pompous and self righteous Major Garner - who proved to be a coward to the end- condoned this. He chased her then and there, slapped her, threw her down and kicked her in the ribs & stomach when he saw she was pregnant. Amazing that she and her baby survived at all in the end as she was a battered victim of assaults and hardships all along. She was the bleeding rose of the story..
But then again all of them ended up battered, losing everything, facing an uncertain future..
Sorry but 'Blood of Roses' was definitely not my cup of tea to be enjoyed.
This book is so well written using actual characters and events including battles fought in Scotland and England in the mid 1700's during the Jacobite Rebellion. The battles scenes are exciting, gruesome, bloody and very life-like..... Chilling. The romance between various couples is passionate and well done. Characters are well descibed and developed throughout. I was outraged by the literal genocide perpetrated by the English armed forces against the Scottish. It sickens me to imagine such hatred can exist within humankind. War is ugly period! I thank author Canham for her in- depth research and applaud her for her writing skill in describing the politics involved and making the battle scenes so real. I highly recommend this book to readers of history, historical fiction and historical romance fiction. Fantastic book!
