I’m not sure you can read this without the preceding books in the series, and have it feel whole. Spencer tries to fill in the necessary info, but the plot just depends too much on the reader’s understanding of all that’s gone before. Then, too, a new reader will miss too much emotional nuance, especially what’s revealed about the relationships between characters.

Given that caveat, I really liked this one. It introduces a new major character, Atticus, his lover Ru and their workmates. The new people offer lots of room for discovery, conflict and drama with Ukiah, Indigo, the Pack and the FBI, both personally and in the ongoing war with the Temple and Ontongard.

Unlike the previous stories, Max, the Bennett Agency and Ukiah’s family are far in the background, as is Pittsburgh itself, since the action takes place in the Boston area and surrounding coast. This helps makes the story feel fresh also, and gives Spencer a new canvas on which to paint. We learn a lot more both about the Ontongard themselves and their approach to conquest, and it makes them even more frightening. Earth is even more threatened than we’d known and the countdown is running fast.

Dog Warrior Ukiah Oregon Book 4 Wen Spencer 9780451459909 Books Reviews

Like the rest of the series, the editing is a bit sloppy, but the characters, world, and storylines are amazingly creative, uniquely stitching together into an wonderful whole.
I have kicked myself over the years that I hadn't bought up the Ukiah Oregon books when I first came across them. They like bloody hens teeth now to find. This is the final book in the series (thus far, hopefully thus far). It doesn't seem likely that Wen will return to this series but a girl can dream can't she?

Anyway I managed to find a copy on that wasn't stupidly expensive and am now all happy. A great read and certainly a most excellent twist to the series that I truly enjoyed. If you get the chance to read these books I would highly recommend.
And hopefully movies based on these books. My favorite series by Wen (Wendy Spencer Kozak) Spencer. True science fiction with aliens, unknown tech and a well thought out plot.
Having read the prior Ukiah books with great enjoyment, I was looking forward to more adventures and developments in the Ukiah world. DOG WARRIOR lives up to the other books of the series in action and character development. But now I think of the series as the Dog Warrior world rather than the Ukiah world.

Ukiah and Atticus are both clones of Magic Boy, yet Atticus is different from Ukiah. DOG WARRIOR has expanded the story and given a new slant to the Dog Warriors. The addition of Atticus, Ru, and Kyle to the Dog Warrior world widens the oppurtunties for story lines. I have to hope there are other Magic Boy bits floating out there waiting to be written down by Wen Spencer.

I read DOG WARRIOR in one night - could not put it done. Wish Wen Spencer could write them as fast.
I liked meeting Atticus very much, I liked his personality and musings and thought he brought a lot to the storyline. I liked the adventure part of the book as well, exciting but not over the top. I also liked that the cult was found to be less evil the more they got to know them...

I read the first 3 books when they were published and came across this one just now. I'm sorry there aren't more, I don't need high powered alien adventures, even just seeing Ukiah and Atticus and Kit out and about in the world would work for me. I can see that they haven't been any written for some years, but if Wen decided to change her mind and create more, I'd love to read them!
Wen Spencer wrote a great 4 volume series long long ago. Ukiah Oregon's Alien Taste was first published in 2001. Volume 4 was published in 2004. And then ... who knows. Vagaries of the print publishing world... no further editions were published. Maybe the author got tired, though the writing didn't feel like it. Probably didn't move enough paper. Or a new VP put the kibash on it to look important....

Anyway, his Penguin/ROC finally necromanced this sucker back from the past.! AWESOME. Urban Fantasy at its best. Its unlikely that it'll ever get further editions. But still. Well worth your time.
"Dog Warrior (Ukiah Oregon Series Book IV)" by Wen Spencer incorporates a startling twist in the storyline that will further immerse you in this spectacular series. I have run out of superlatives when trying to describe how truly special this story is, it's simply wonderful! With the introduction of 3 interesting new characters, each with their own interesting personalities, self doubts, and ties to the Cub, has allowed the author to take new directions while staying within the same storyline thread. WOW, I feel so fortunate to have found the Ukiah Oregon series. Wen Spencer now stands near the top of my urban sci/fi adventure genre authors list. Hopefully, she will continue with this series, it has broken new ground in the sci/fi adventure genre. 5 stars!!!!!
