I love the premise of this book. Demons that ride humans as hosts, and are known and either worshiped or reviled in modern society. The world was interesting, and Morgan's immediate conflict as a woman who disdain's demon's finding herself the reluctant host to one.I wanted to like Morgan as much as the world that Jenna Black created, but she ultimately came off as a bit whiney and ineffectual. Character development of the secondary characters was stronger, and the pacing and action kept me reading. So overall if you enjoy your Demon fantasy, enjoy a unique world-build, and appreciate a bit of S&M sexy times thrown in (with an actual rationale for including it), then this book might just be for you.

The Devil Inside Morgan Kingsley Exorcist Book 1 Jenna Black 9780553590449 Books Reviews
I got to the end of this story and felt kicked around. Morgan - the exorcist with a hidden demon on board, gets kicked around a fair bit too. Can't say that her wishes got much of an outing here. Seemed the demons were running the show. To add it up she had (spoiler alert!!)one of her (ex)friends killed in front of her, her boyfriend tortured and her brother shot and turned into a zombie. To achieve this less than stellar outcome she got punched in the head a few times (once historical to be sure), had to consent to being beaten bloody and forced to be an observer in some pretty (from my view) dodgy S&M. Overall she came up with few ideas and got pushed around by everyone around her.
It was never clear to me why her demon king possesser just didn't bail into some handy human and get a host who was more use to him. Also not clear why wiping out your opponents on the mortal plain is such a big deal.
Having said that i am still curious as to how it all works out for her so may get the next installment . - Just read the reviews and may give it a miss
Many people volunteer to be human hosts for demons. With a demon in control of their bodies, they are able to do heroic things. Morgan Kingsley believes the very idea of someone else controlling her every action to be SICK! She would never agree to host a demon! Her parents are part of the Spirit Society "SS" and actually help convince humans to host. Her parents were never more proud than when their son, Andrew, became host to the demon named Raphael. Morgan, who loved Andrew more than life, now avoids him. To Morgan, Andrew is dead. He is now a back seat driver, unable to do anything for the rest of his life except watch and listen as Raphael uses his body.
Hating demons so much, Morgan grew up to become an exorcist. An exorcist is called in whenever a demonic crime is committed to remove the demon from its host. Problem is that some of the hosts are fine after an exorcism and some of the hosts are empty shells that require care for the rest of their lives. No one knows why.
After performing a routine exorcism on an unwillingly possessed child, Morgan begins sleep walking. Recently Morgan has been finding notes written to herself while asleep. The notes claim that she is an unwilling host and has one of the most powerful among demons within without her knowledge. Morgan believes it a lie made up from her nightmares. But Morgan soon has cause to wonder and turns to Adam White, head of the Special Forces division dealing with rogue demons. Since Adam is a demon, Morgan is not thrilled having to go to him for help, but Adam owes her a big favor. Morgan learns that the demon within her is named Lugh. Morgan's aura somehow overwhelms the demon's. Lugh is not within Morgan by choice either. Turns out Lugh is not only one of the most powerful demons, but a high ranking one as well. Those who trapped Lugh within Morgan finds out she is aware of her hitchhiker and now it seems that everyone in the world is trying to kill her!
***** An outstanding beginning to a new super natural series! The book starts out with action and only gets faster. I never noticed the story to slow down at all. The plot slowly unfolds to reveal that more is going on than anyone can possibly guess. I sincerely believe the author to have a major winner on her hands with Morgan Kingsley. *****

I bought this, the first book in this series, to test-drive a new (to me) author. Then I had to buy the other 4. When they arrived, I immediately lost a week of household chores. I barely managed to make dinner and feed the cats. As a stand-alone, I would rate this 1st book in the series as 4-star. As the launch to a great 5-book series (and book 5 does feel like the end), all five get 5-stars.
Morgan Kingsley, perhaps the most powerful exorcist in the country, gets knocked out and drugged so that a demon can possess her. She hates demons with a passion and loves her job. Pretty good premise for a story right there.
The first book in the series introduces the reader to other characters that will be key in the rest of the series. One caution read these books in order!!! While you could understand and enjoy any of the books stand-alone, you would miss a whole lot of character development. In the first book, Morgan is really, really hot-tempered and impulsive. She has such impulse- and anger-management issues, I found her to be a real pain-in-the-ass. Hang in there. She grows up. By #5 The Devil's Playground, she's only a bit impulsive and she has decent control over her temper.
There are good sex scenes in each book of the series, but those who want their sex to be "plain vanilla" might find some parts of the series disturbing, as there are gay sex scenes as well as a bit of BDSM. Morgan finds all that quite disturbing at first, but gradually gets used to it, and eventually comes to the realization that the closest, most loving relationship she has ever seen is that between two guys present all through the series.
In addition to a good, fast-paced plot throughout the series, what I really liked about all the books are the relationships, people overcoming prejudices and bigotry and a lot of personal baggage. Not only Morgan, but other characters too, come to grips with a lot of resentments and grudges, and learn to recognize the good and the not-so-good and even the bad in others as they currently are, not as they used to be or were thought to be.
Jenna Black has been added to my Favorite Authors List, along with Laurell K Hamilton, Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, and Kim Harrison (not necessarily in that order).
